Lacuna Coil - Comalies (2002/Century Media)
Rating - 8.3

Daylight Dancer -- mp3

The band seems to finally live up to its potential and promise on this, its third full-length release. 'Comalies' is a much more "focused" endeavor, as there is plenty here to sink your teeth into. The vocals continue to definitely be the featured instrument--both in talent, and also in production. However, the distortion really becomes an asset to the writing process this go-round. While Evanescence was the band to get a big commercial break in 2003, that sound was being played much earlier -- by Lacuna Coil.
The steady and mesmerizing "Swamped" opens the project, while a good chorus marks "Heaven's a Lie". "Humane" is liquid and moving, "Tight Rope" is good, and the title track features some really nice bass work.
The heavy guitars of "Daylight Dancer" are a perfect mix with the keyboards and other goth- inducing sounds, while both "Self Deception" and "The Prophet Said" are also of the heavier variety. The solid "Unspoken" is one of the disc's top spots.
