Lars Eric Mattsson--Obsession (1998)
Rating--7.0
Fairly heavy Malmsteen and Alcatrazz influences appear evident,
and the vox are actually quite similar to the wails of Graham Bonnet---though the slower, almost spoken sections remind of
Bruce Dickinson. Nice keyboard incorporation, and while the distortion isn't overwhelming is does lend an almost goth feel to the
project.
The driving riff that is used as the mainframe of "Messenger" is a top highlight, and other strong moments are brought
out in "Time and Again" and "Mother Forgive". "Sense and Obsession" shows a slower side, with nice mood established with
some layered guitar work. Along similar lines is the mystical "As the Sun Meets the Sky"---a nice piece.
