King's X--Out of the Silent Planet (1988/Atlantic)
Rating--7.2
Power of Love--RealAudio
An interesting, fairly "new" brand of hard rock/metal, as King's X comes across as a vocal-dominated group--though there is still a solid base. There's some
Saigon Kick-like vocal melodies and blending, and the distortion sound is thick, in a muddled sort of way.
The kick-in, heavy push chorus
of "Power of Love" makes it one of the disc's top tracks, and "Sometimes" perhaps previews vocalist Doug Pinnick's 2000 project Supershine...
Numerous songs are good, including "Wonder," "King," "What is This?," and "Visions," though some, like "Shot of Love," may be a bit too "happy".
The band
would soon forge a strong semi-underground following, with albums being released at a regular pace hereafter.
