Cold Gin--RealAudio
Kiss' debut album burst onto the scene in the early 70's, grabbing the immediate attention of a youthful generation. This was actually accomplished as much by image - make-up and stage-show antics - than music. That's not to say, however, that the band didn't have its rocking moments...
The overall impact of this band-- along with shock-rocker Alice Cooper-- is immense and unmistakable. A number of bands were spawned from Kiss' collection of metal cod-pieces, such as Motley Crue, W.A.S.P., and Twisted Sister, to name a bare few.
Gene and Paul rotate vocals on this one, as will become a regular practice for each album in the future. The fresh approach to vocals, the big chords and bigger props and image, and overall anthemic sound would end up laying down the first draft of "how-to" on arena rock.
Rockers "Deuce," "Cold Gin," and "Strutter" have each stood the test of time as some of rock's favorite anthems. Other highlights include the nasty "Firehouse," the chorus-driven "Nothin' to Lose," and strong closer "Black Diamond".
A great and promising album that would unknowingly start a 25-plus year legacy like the rock world hasn't really had since. Mothers hide your daughters... not to mention the make-up!
HOT CHOPS: The slow guitar groove and nasty-ass Gene growl on "Cold Gin"-- one of my all-time fave Kiss tunes. Down and dirty pulse rock at its best.
