Kenziner--Timescape (1998/Leviathan)
Rating--7.7
Future Signs--RealAudio
Speed prog metal, very much in the Malmsteen/Symphony X
vein. A few shades of Stratovarius, as well... but the biggest comparisons are with the first two
groups.
Swift and intricate throughout, with some fast key work and plenty of double-bass drums. Steady overall... but perhaps
a bit lacking in consistent riff/chord thickness. A relatively small complaint, though-- especially if you enjoy the bombastic
styles of Malmsteen, Graham Bonnet, et al.
"Future Signs" opens with a good thump, and "Walking in the Rain" stands out with slower, cutting riffs. Both "Thru
the End" and the title track are good, with the latter having numerous pace shifts.
"Into the Light" is a fast track, incorporating
leads mixed well with the main rhythm.
In all, an above-average melodic-speed offering.
