Judas Priest--Demolition (2001/SPV)
Rating--8.5
Feed on Me--RealAudio
One on One--RealAudio
The old, classic Priest sound is mostly gone--that much should be accepted. In its place, however, there are still some biting grooves, snarling riffs, and bottom-heavy
thump. The second "Owens-era" release features the same technical, dropped-down distortion as was on 'Jugulator'. All in all, Tipton and company can still write good
metal music; its focus has just shifted with time. For some "classic" Priest staples, see Mr. Halford's new band...
"One on One" is pure groove, and "Feed on Me"
flows and thumps as well. The bulldozing and reckless "Bloodsuckers" has a pronged chorus, and "Subterfuge" follows suit.
"In Between" lurches forward following
a slow intro, "Devil Digger" is a paced grinder, and each of "Hell is Home," "Jekyll and Hyde," and "Cyberface" have strong moments.
Two reworked songs show
up as bonus tracks--the adrenaline-injected, to-the-hilt "Rapid Fire," and a slowed-down and crunchy "Green Manalishi".
HOT CHOPS: How about that pre-chorus, vocal knife stalk in "One on One"? Owens ends it with a scream, and the guitar solo continues it.
