Iron Savior--Iron Savior (1997/Noise)
Rating--8.8
Children of the Wasteland--RealAudio
A molten power metal project by Kai Hansen of Helloween and Gamma Ray
fame, and Piet Sielck, the expert producer of bands such as
Blind Guardian and Grave Digger. All of these bands' sounds are called upon at one time or another,
though the music is closest to Primal Fear, Rage, and the speed of Running Wild.
Naturally, the classic sounds of Priest shine through as well.
Despite Hansen being the better known
entity, Sielck is the true driving force of Iron Savior, as he handles the majority of both the songwriting and lead vocal duties. With a voice like a
honed and polished Peavy Wagner, it makes for a smooth and ripping good time. And on top of all this? It's a concept
album! Atlantis, an alien machine known as the Iron Savior, and more...
It's difficult to separate the high points, as virtually every song belongs on (or damn near) a pedestial. The driving "Children of
the Wasteland" is a fave, as is the rapid and intricate "Brave New World". The title track features some precision riffing, and
cutting axework highlights "Watcher in the Sky."
Take a close listen to "For the World". Yep, that's Blind Guardian's
Hansi Kursch handling the lead vocal duties.
If your favorite tune from this release isn't mentioned, don't get alarmed. Like
I said, they're all standouts. Power metalheads unite...
