Impellitteri - Pedal to the Metal (2004/JVC)
Rating - 8.7

Impelllitteri returns with new vocalist Curtis Skelton, replacing the again-departed Graham Bonnet. Skelton comes from the LA-based band Speak No Evil, and reminds quite a bit of former Imp vocalist Rob Rock at times. He is a bit deeper than RR and rougher around the edges, but possesses the same melodic knack. The songwriting on this disc is more fluid in places than 2002’s ‘System X,’ though at other times the band dips into a chord-dominated, bone-heavy style. Overall an aggressive return, and this is a release that continues to improve and impress with every listen.
"The Writings on the Wall" opens with some intricate playing, and all of "Destruction," "Judgment Day," "Propaganda Mind," and "The Fall of Titus" are good. The churning "Hurricane" is one of the heaviest songs of the band’s career, and the chunkier sections of "Crushing Daze" remind of the thickness of Sevendust. When mixed with Chris Impellitteri’s blazing lead sections, you have quite a combo. "The Iceman Cometh" is another heavy piece, while "Punk" is a ripping good time -- the rap/rock/effects concoction makes fun of Eminem and the "mainstream" music scene of the past few years.
A pleasant surprise is the still-heavy semi ballad "Stay Tonight," which boasts a strong and catchy chorus. If any of the band’s fans were somewhat put off by the last release, this one should definitely help reel them back in.
