In Flames - Soundtrack to Your Escape (2004/Nuclear Blast)
Rating - 8.2

Despite trying its best to shoot themselves in the foot, In Flames has actually rebounded a bit with this release. "The Quiet Place" is the first single from this album, and it reeks. That whiny, nu-metal style of singing is spewed throughout the track, and will undoubtedly turn off a number of their classic fans. About two or three other songs follow that same annoying-vocal trend, but thankfully not all are like that. In fact, there are many instances where the music (and vocals) return to the complex and ripping styles that frequented the band's late-90s releases.
"F(r)iend is a slicing track, "Dead Alone" is flowing throughout, and "Superhero of the Computer Rage" is excellent and aggressive. Other notables include "Like You Better Dead" and "Dial 595-Escape." Hopefully the band will continue to work through this (at times) simplistic phase of their career and give us a 100% churner at some point in the future. 'Soundtrack to Your Escape' is a good start.
