In Flames--Colony (1999/Nuclear Blast)

Embody the Invisible--RealAudio
Intricate and melodic death metal, with higher-end vocals that almost border on Black---though not nearly as extreme. This is a bit like a death version of Iced Earth, if you will. The distortion and riffing is ultra sharp, and heavy-and-fast is the norm.
The fast pace of opener "Embody the Invisible" blends with a great flow to form a melodic masterpiece, and followup "Ordinary Story" mixes death vocals with light, regular interludes, and is strong throughout. A heavy drive marks "Scorn," and the bruising title track is a great shuffle between smooth and heavy moments.
Both "Behind Space '99" and "The New World" are good cuts, as In Flames is a band that appears poised to make a major move on the power metal scene.
