"Hair metal" from the eighties, mainly due to image. While almost always razor-sharp in riffs and production, occasionally simplistic in musical format. Topics quite often top out with girls, sex, and money. Despite all of this (or perhaps because of it?), still given a bad rap--there is a lot of splendid metal that arose from this genre.
