Grave Digger--The Grave Digger (2001/GUN)
Rating--8.7

The House--RealAudio
Like a cask of biting red wine, Grave Digger just keeps getting better with age. This latest offering is solid, no-nonsense European power metal. The production and sound takes another step forward, and the thick guitars mix in enough nasty riffs to keep the head moving. In all, a strong and workman-like release, with enough flair to keep fans of multiple genres interested. The vocals are still gruff, but are a mark of the Grave Digger sound.
The note-driven churning of "The House" slaps you around, with the chorus of "The Grave Digger" making it a solid selection as well. "Scythe of Time" is a slow groover, while offerings at the faster end of the spectrum include "King Pest," "Sacred Fire," "Haunted Palace," and the nasty digipak bonus cut "Black Cat".
"Funeral Procession" is a treat in that there are Maiden-like bass lines throughout, whereas the solo takes on attributes of Priest's Tipton and Downing! In all, it's safe to say that Grave Digger has matched its back catalog with this release, and remain a formidable player in the metal scene today.
