Fates Warning - FWX (2004/Metal Blade)
Rating - 8.3

The band’s 10th release, this is also one of their better releases of late. There is a lot of atmosphere present, but plenty of distortion as well. More character is on display that on the previous ‘Disconnected,’ as Matheos and Alder weave a strong web of musicianship.
When the moody and capable opener "Left Here" gives way to the heaviness of "Simple Human," you know the band is in full swing. The apt water-like feel of "River Wide Ocean Deep" is a treat, with other nice points being "Heal Me" and "Crawl."
"Stranger (With a Familiar Face)" has a deep-rooted, almost Tool-like flow and deep-rooted meander, and the disc-closing "Wish" is solid and mesmerizing. In all, a consistent and thorough listening experience.
