Feinstein - Third Wish (2004/Steamhammer)

Rebelution-mp3

Guitarist David Feinstein was once a part of both Elf and The Rods, and his metal bloodlines include his cousin Ronnie James Dio. Association to greatness doesn’t always mean greatness, of course. However, in Feinstein’s case, he’s doing just fine for himself. With vocalist John West of Royal Hunt lending a helping hand, ‘Third Wish’ is an absolutely stellar classic-metal release. There are some sprinkles of Dio-era Sabbath (as well as ‘Holy Diver’), some classic Priest, and a good deal of evil-ass Rainbow. West’s deep-seated and mesmerizing vocals push the already-strong tracks over the top, mixing well with the undeniably thick and tasty guitar tone that Feinstein displays. In all, this is simply a great listen, and a refreshing metal "staple" amid a world of Power-and-Prog-and-Symphonic offerings that appear to the be norm in our underground world today.
Opener "Regeneration" is a good track, but probably the least impressive of the bunch -- so sit tight, if you’re not impressed. "Rebelution" is a bottom-heavy churner, with "Streaming Star" featuring a chopping gallop.
A head-moving chug absolutely owns "Rule the World," and "Masquerade" has another driving rhythm that pulls forth a "damn!" from your fanboy lungs.
"Far Beyond" is a thick slab, "Poison Ivy" is ultra steady, and both "Firefighter" and "Live to Ride, Ride to Live" are strong -- though simply par for the course by the time you reach the album’s end (which is a good thing!!).
The top jewel to this release is likely the title song, which may just be one of metal’s best (and thus more unheralded) tracks of the past 5-10 years. Checking in at just over eight minutes, it begins with some of West’s absolutely mystical singing, before giving way to a diabolical, deliberate mainframe. A true listening joy.
