Elegy--State of Mind (1997)
Rating--8.8
State of Mind--RealAudio
Loser's Game--RealAudio
Heavier than 'Supremacy' and 'Lost,' but still in the same overall vein. The power
part of power/progressive is definitely stressed, as the music, while just as intricate, is thicker than before. Keyboards are still
evident, and overall this is simply a tasty treat to behold.
A host of tracks are solid and heavy, and full of chops,
including opener "Visual Vortex," "Shadow Dancer," "Beyond," and "Aladdin's Cave."
Rising a little higher are the rapid
stutter riffs of the majestic "Trust," as well as the nasty riff-and-pace of "Loser's Game." Disc closer "Suppression" is one of the heaviest and
most driving tracks, though the top highlight is probably reserved for the title track. Following a mesmerizing intro bass-line verse,
there's a great pickup that melts into the power vocal-melody-driven chorus. Excellent work!!
"Destiny Calling" hearkens
back to some of the lighter moments of 'Supremacy,' as it moves from piano and orchestration to a strong distortion blend.
Elegy is one of the brightest Euro power/prog groups out there.
