Elegy--Manifestation of Fear (1998/Modern Music)
Rating--8.3
Savage Grace--RealAudio
Even heavier than before, as the band shifts towards more power and less progressive. However, this should still please most
of the older fans. Just not as consistently melodic through and through.
The songs aren't as riff-specific as on
'State of Mind,' but rather pack more punch in bottom-heaviness and galloping, rapid guitar work.
This leads to multiple listens being required before the songs begin
to stand out in your memory. Small complaint, though!
The heavy and fast "Unorthodox Methods" begins the storyline of
this concept album, and similar magnitude is shown in follow-up "Frenzy" and later on "Victim of Circumstance."
The chunky "Savage Grace" is strong, and
"Master of Deception" follows a classic Elegy sectional platform, being paced by chords mixed with speed.
Strong riffs
lurk within "Solitary Day," and a heavy intro gives way to the slow grind pulse of the title song.
HOT CHOPS: Check out the pre-solo riff movement of the title track. These guys can shred...
