Elegy--Lost (1995/Modern)
Rating--8.6
Spirits--RealAudio
Thicker keyboard work, but the distortion stays sharp as well. Perhaps the mixing is just a bit different, but the alteration is
noticable. Not really a detraction, though, as it's more the chord-enhancing, background type of keys, as opposed to the tooling,
prog-style work. Vocalist Ian Parry takes over the helm on this release, and is a nice addition.
After a few decent tunes, the second half of the disc truly smokes, carrying the weight. The title track
features some classic Elegy pull-off riffs, and "Everything" is good as well. Heavy, chopping axework highlights "Always With
You," and "Spanish Inquisition" is probably the fastest track offered.
"Spirits" is a spendid mix of heavy, thick chops, and
caustic and biting vocals. The winding and rhythmic "Crossed the Line" has a strong note backbone, and the chilling
intro vox of "Live It Again" set the stage for what will be a no-guitar classic, as the atmospheric tune features layered
organ/key work behind those haunting Parry vocals.
In all, yet another strong and impressive facet of the Elegy catalogue.
