Elegy--Labyrinth of Dreams (1992/Modern)
Rating--8.5
I'm No Fool--RealAudio
The debut from power/progressive mainstays Elegy, with a sound that is both technical and treble-edged. Swift tunes
crackle with intricate lead riffs and runs, and keyboards add depth to the music. Still a fairly light atmosphere at this point;
the band will get "darker" in the later stages of its catalog. Works of Helloween and
Crimson Glory are brought to mind in places, as well as the other standard Euro power/prog groups.
"The Grand Change" is a good opener, and "I'm No Fool" is a driving track. A head-moving power crunch bolsters "Take My
Love," while "The Guiding Light" is the disc's fastest track.
Both "Trouble in Paradise" and "Powergames" show solid
songwriting capabilities, as the latter mixes intricate lead work with a heavy backbone.
The start of a very solid string of
releases for the group, which is still going strong today.
