Eidolon--Nightmare World (2000/Metal Blade)
Rating--8.4
Lunar Mission--RealAudio
Fast, intricate, and distortion-etched power metal. A great new face on the scene, with songs chock full of thick chords and sharp notes. Some comparisons
would be a faster Angel Dust, and Nevermore with a more distorted and crisp guitar sound.
Good, clean power
vocals add to the pleasure, as this is definitely not the norm for a U.S. release-- it smacks of the best of European-quality power. A great signing by Metal Blade, and an
added note is that the drummer (Shawn Driver) did all of the writing! Interesting, to say the least!
Opening cruncher "Nightmare World" has some ripping verses and a good, chugging chorus, and showcases the band's excellent razor-distortion sound from the onset.
A good rhythm moves "Noctern Aeternus," "Eye of Illusion" is fast, and a slower pace to "Glorified Suicide" allows the band to show off a more plodding mode.
The top highlight is "Lunar Mission," with its killer, descending-drive rhythm-- all of which follows after a calm acoustic intro. The long and multi-faceted "Dreamscape"
moves from some deep, nasty beginning riffing, to a more flowing pace in its later stages.
A power act which should gain immediate recognition in Europe. Hopefully
U.S. fans will follow suit.
