This is the sixth studio release from the band,
and likely their heaviest. The distortion sound is
sharp and thick, reminding (not surprisingly) of the
more bottom-heavy Avantasia material. Tobias Sammet
has that great, edged Bruce Dickinson voice of his in
top form; this is a solid release from all
aspects.
Opener "Mysteria" is a heavy and thick
slab with some driving verses. The import version of
the disc has an alternate version of the song as one
of the bonus tracks, with Kreator’s Mille Petrozza
lending a hand on vocals. The extended "The Piper
Never Dies" has a slow bass thump and some solid
chorus axework, with the strong "Under the Moon" being
full of chopping riffs.
The disc’s other bonus
track, "Children of Steel, is fast and ripping, with
the other good cuts being "We Don’t Need a Hero,"
"Down to the Devil," "King of Fools," and "Navigator."
The band pulls a Helloween stunt with the spunky and
somewhat goofy "Lavatory Love Machine." While a "fun"
song in its own right, the light-heartedness isn’t
indicative of the rest of the album, and it’s
unfortunate that it was chosen as the first single.
