Edguy--Theater of Salvation (1999/AFM)
Rating--8.3
The Unbeliever--Real Audio
Intricate Euro power/speed from a band that is quickly rising among the ranks of that particular genre. Hailing from Germany, Edguy released its 1997 debut album
when the band members were still in their teens. Showing musical growth, this offering has some tasty moments.
There's some of the Helloween
layered vocals, a little of Blind Guardian's speed, and when the band slows down and gets thick and chunky,
Stratovarius is brought to mind.
Vocally, singer Tobias Sammet is a splendid mix between Helloween's Kiske and Queensryche's Tate. A couple of bonus/
unreleased tracks are added onto the end of the import version of this offering.
A number of songs fall into the "swift and good" category, including "Babylon,"
"Wake Up the King," "Falling Down," and "Arrows Fly".
The thick, chugging backbone of "The Headless Game" matches well with Sammet's enchanting vocals,
and "The Unbeliever" is nasty and ripping. "Holy Shadows" is more of a paced track, and solid near disc's end.
Well-written and well-played metal.
