Dream Theater - Train of Thought (2003/Elektra)

In the Name of God-mp3

Dream Theater returns to the music scene with an album featuring a great distortion tone and overall sound. This is the nastiest and most aggressive they're sounded in a long time, and the band really employs Petrucci's abilities to their fullest-which hasn't always been the case. There are several 10-plus minute tracks, but each as its share of chunkiness and metal grooving. A nice and tasty treat.
The chugging rhythm at the onset of "As I Am" helps set the mood for the entire endeavor, and "This Dying Soul" follows with good parts sprinkled throughout. "Endless Sacrifice" features a light/heavy mix, and "Honor Thy Father" has some dark and grinding parts, especially during the mid-song spoken parts.
The obligatory long instrumental is present in the form of "Stream of Consciousness", with "In the Name of God" closing the affair out with yet another solid and cranking rhythm. Overall, a good (and very metallic) offering from DT.
