Dream Theater--Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002/Elektra)

The Glass Prison--RealAudio
This 2-disc set is a concept offering that features several ten-plus minutes tracks on the first CD, with the second being one long song--though thankfully it is separated into eight sections that can be accessed via your player. Some 'Clone'-era Threshold shows up at times on disc #1, as it is the heavier offering of the two. There's great drumwork throughout--always a strong DT point. This release should have a little bit of something for fans of each of the "stages" that Dream Theater has dabbled in. However, there are still bands in the same genre (power/prog) that do it quite a bit better, but continue to lack the publicity push that DT enjoys...
Fast drums and heavy pull-offs romp through the nasty opener "The Glass Prison," and there's lots of mid and end-track ripping to be heard. "Blind Faith" features a light start, but a heavy and methodical rhythm eventually takes over. More strong riffing surfaces in "The Great Debate".
Disc two contains the eight-part "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence," with the sectional highlights being "The Test That Stumped Them All" and the smooth and lighter "Solitary Shell".
A good offering, and the amount of material contained here avoids being overkill due to its commendable talent and quality.
