Pull Me Under
A mix between the occasional intricate speed of bands such as Helloween (though DT doesn't show it with much consistency) and the progressiveness of someone like Queensryche. Dream Theater brings a flashy style of metal, with the trump card being healthy doses of keyboards. Exceptional guitar and vocal work is provided by John Petrucci and James LaBrie, respectively, which add to the drawing factor of the group.
This album probably has a bit too much keyboards in it for me, and some of the arrangements get too disjointed at times, instead of simply just rocking out. These are small complaints, however, as much of the disc is pure instrumental genius. If fast prog metal is your thing, this is a can't-miss.
Highlights include the classic "Pull Me Under," the Queensryche-esque "Another Day," "Metropolis--Part I," and "Learning to Live".
HOT CHOPS: The chorus of "Pull Me Under" is a great sing-along, but the building intro into it is even better. When LaBrie and Petrucci finally come together with full force, you know it. Check out the sequence that starts at 2:56, and then crowns at 3:06 to roll onward. Nice work!
