Dokken--Live From the Sun (2000/CMC)
Rating--7.3
A decent enough live offering from the band, though there are several drawbacks. Vocalist Don Dokken's voice continues to slip with age (and constant smoking, no doubt),
as the high notes and range-testing parts really show the strain. At this point, the clearest voice on stage may be the background vocals of Jeff Pilson...
New guitarist
Reb Beach provides a spark, and he holds his own. Following George Lynch would be a tough act for anyone to try their hand at, but Beach's chops actually breathe life into (and
save) several tracks. Again-- not bad, overall. But "Beast From the East" is the live offering to go after, if you want crowd-driven Dokken.
From the past catalog,
"Kiss of Death," "The Hunter," and "Into the Fire" stand out the most, as the band mainly performs the old tracks that garnered its mid-to-late '80s success.
