Dio--Dream Evil (1987)
Rating--7.2
More power epicness from RJD, and while the sound has toughened up a bit since the last release, the overall
effectiveness of the songs seem to be slipping. The driving, catching punch that powered the songs on the first two releases
shows up in fewer places than one would like---perhaps it's just the changing metal scene? In any case, the group continues to
be compared to its first two releases; a difficult task to face.
"Faces in the Window" has a fast pace, with a classic Dio riff.
"Naked in the Rain" is another strong mover, as is the title cut. "All the Fools Sailed Away" is an atmospheric, moving piece, and features a
powerful chorus. "I Could Have Been a Dreamer," the lead single, is good---however, it's a little slow and stiff for the classic Dio fare.
A decent album, and like its predecessor a must for the true Dio fan, as the vocals are still breathtaking.
BTW, Craig Goldie
handles the axe on this release, and continues the great six-string tradition for the band.
