Death--Symbolic (1995)
Rating--7.2

Crystal Mountain--RealAudio
Death has long been considered one of the forefathers of that very metal genre, and has carried the torch well---though the band's music differs somewhat from the present-day definition of "death metal". Chuck Schuldiner's vocals, while growly, are not nearly as deep-throated as those that can be found on a number of other acts---especially some of the Norwegian and middle-European groups. In fact, Schuldiner is quite understandable in places on this disc...
Technical speed, along the lines of an At the Gates, though not as hell-bent thrashy. Reminds of Pantera in places as well, though not as bottom-heavy. In all, a lot of fast drums and intricate guitar playing, ala Megadeth in its 'Rust in Peace' days. The lack of variety in the vocals, however, hurts the songs a bit. Despite the songs being intricate and in-depth, the mono-tone vox cause too many of them to sound alike, especially on the first few listens. Still, the technical talent is undeniable.
Highlights include the nice continual rhythm of "Sacred Serenity," the fast-paced and sharp guitar work of "1,000 Eyes" and "Misanthrope," as well as the above-average "Zero Tolerance," "Without Judgement," "Crystal Mountain," and title song.
