Bruce Dickinson - Tyranny of Souls (2005/Sanctuary)

Abduction - mp3

It's been seven years since Dickinson's last solo studio release -- I honestly hadn't realized it had been that long since 'The Chemical Wedding' until I looked it up. 'Tyranny of Souls' continues in more or less the same songwriting vein... but when categorizing it with 'Accident of Birth' or the aforementioned 'Chemical Wedding,' the tracks held here are more of the "good" variety, than standouts. A number of the cuts here are certainly strong, and Dickinson can still write majestic lyrics and belt his air-siren voice... but at the same time, there are no instant metal staples such as "The Tower," "Book of Thel," or "Road to Hell". Small complaints, though (if you really want to call them that). Bruce is Bruce, and he hasn't wimped out on us -- fans of Maiden (and his solo works) shall enjoy this, I say!
"Abduction" cracks forward with plenty of distortion and life, and is a definite headbanging highlight. "Soul Intruders" has a steady verse rhythm, with all of "Kill Devil Hill," "Power of the Sun," and "A Tyranny of Souls" being good as well.
