Death Angel - The Ultra-Violence (1987/Enigma)
Rating - 8.3

Death Angel arose from the ‘80s Bay Area thrash scene as a family affair, featuring two brothers and three of their cousins. On this their debut offering, the band brings a healthy dose of classic speed and thrash along the lines of early Testament and Anthrax. The vocals are actually much better and more refined than many of the other early speed units had to offer. Had the band kept the style they featured here, they likely would have had a legitimate shot of joining the "big four" one day. This is just good, old-fashioned thrash, the way it’s supposed to be.
An excellent thrashy groove highlights "Evil Priest," with solid tracks "Voracious Souls" and "Kill as One" following. The title track is a long, maniacal instrumental, with "Mistress of Pain" and "Final Death" closing out the affair.
