Heartfelt, poignant grunge metal/rock. A lot like early STP in places, with shades of Alice in Chains filtering through as well. Very catchy tunes for the most part, but still managing to remain fairly tough. Haunting vocals...
First track "Torn" is excellent, with a biting chorus. "Ode" has choppy chords with a deep chorus, and "Sister" is winding and bouncy. "Unforgiven" is absolutely ripping, and along with "Torn" fights it out for best-track honors.
"One" is an easily-paced track with a great kick-in chorus, and "Illusion" is good as well. A couple of the slower tracks made it as AOR/new rock singles, including "What's This Life For" and the title track.
All in all, a very solid release. Not traditional metal by any means, but tougher than the standard hard rock coming out today---if there is such a thing anymore.
HOT CHOPS: The slowed down, vocals-only spoken part near the end of "Torn". Once again, haunting...
