COC--America's Volume Dealer (2000/Sanctuary)
Rating--7.0

Over Me--RealAudio
The band surfaces with more of its trademark technical chops in places, which is a welcome sound. In other parts, however, it seems as if they try too hard to emulate recent-day Metallica, a band which sort of took COC under its wing on the past few tours. And that is not a welcome sound.
The group's distortion and quality is still a decent cry from 'Blind'--its best release--but this may very well be the one to break through commercially for them. If so, then kudos-- it wasn't all that long ago that they were playing the clubs in Raleigh, and the boys have worked hard...
A nice flow coupled with a tasty wah-effect moves "Over Me," and "Congratulations Song" has a chunky mainframe. "Sleeping Martyr" is a light-starting track that evolves with its heavier chorus groove, and "13 Angels" is also slower but good.
"Zippo" is an adequate song, but then you have selections such as "Diablo Blvd." and "Who's Got the Fire". While ok overall, they could be placed right in the middle of one of the 'Load' releases and you'd never be able to tell the difference. From the guitar hooks to Pepper Keenan's Hetfield-like voice... COC is capable of more.
Let's see if this one takes off. Given America's past-decade taste in metal, it just may.
