Children of Bodom--Hatebreeder ('99/Nuclear Blast)
Rating--8.0
Black Widow--RealAudio
Intricate, fast, and cutting Black Metal. Not quite as tight or thick as At the Gates
or In Flames, but close.
The high-end vocals are present, giving the music an aggressive
feel. Great in-song shifts keep the tracks from getting in ruts, and the band will occasionally sprinkle in piano and organ sections
without warning, ala Therion.
"Silent Night, Bodom Night" is a fast track, with a good,
chugging mid-section. The part thrashing, part groove "Black Widow" is all power, and a definite high mark.
"Wrath
Within" is good and intricate, and both "Bed of Razors" and the title cut are strong.
A solid and talented band, and a powerful unit to watch in the Black/Speed genre.
