Carcass--Heartwork (1993/Earache)

Heartwork-mp3

Carcass was one of the original death/grindcore bands of the late '80s, along with Napalm Death. On this release, widely considered their best, they rip forward with a distortion-and-riff detailed offering. There are tight notes and rhythms, good drumming, and solid playing throughout. The vocals are in the deathy realm, but it's obvious where their musical sound would go on to influence bands like Eidolon and others.
The chugs held within "Buried Dreams" start things off, with "Carnal Forge" being faster and more adrenaline injected. The rolling, thrashing rhythm of the title song makes it a hit, with "This Mortal Coil" being in the same mold. "Arbeit Macht Fleisch" has a killer mid-track break, and other good cuts include "Embodiment," "Doctrinal Expletives," "This is Your Life," and "Death Certificate".
