Alice Cooper - Hey Stoopid (1991/Epic)
Rating - 8.3

Alice follows up the successful 'Trash' with a release that didn’t do nearly as well commercially, which once again proves that commercial success is sometimes inversely related to quality -- 'Hey Stoopid' is a heavier and much better album. There’s another all-star list of guest artists, and once again they’ll give you an idea of the album’s direction: Mick Mars, Nikki Sixx, Slash, Ozzy, Vinnie Moore, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani... the lighter glam crowd was mostly left out of this one.
There are a handful of tracks that would be at home on 'Trash' -- "Snakebite" and "Dirty Dreams" come to mind, but overall the tone is much darker. Never known as a master of subtlety, Alice provides his take on the drug culture in rock music with the title track, and hits the mark. "Dangerous Tonight," "Hurricane Years," and "Little By Little" all typify the darker tone, with the latter of the three featuring a strong solo by Joe Satriani. Surprisingly, some of the best songs on the album are the ballads: "Love’s a Loaded Gun" is a brilliantly-written song about a disturbed man killing a prostitute he’d fixated on, and "Burning Our Bed" is a sensitive track about lost love with a typical Alice twist: his response is to burn the bed, presumably with her still in it. Deliciously wicked!
The heaviest and best song on the album, "Feed My Frankenstein," gained some well-deserved attention when performed live in "Wayne’s World" the following year. Overall, this is Alice at his "second phase" best, and highly recommended.
