Lizzy Borden--Visual Lies (1987)
Rating--7.8

Me Against the World--RealAudio
Lizzy Borden relied heavily on image--which probably did help a lot--but the music actually had some high points to it. Despite the "I'll Kill You" persona, the music was a bit lighter, treading waters similar to those of Dokken, Ratt, and Europe. The most impressive facet would be Borden's vocals, which are smooth and strong, with great range and resonance, ala Joey Tempest. Other bands whose music is at times comparable would be Autograph, Vinnie Vincent Invasion (VVI's slower material), and Phantom Blue.
The opening track and lead single "Me Against the World" is probably the disc's top highlight, as it has a great driving beat. Also, the in-verse singing is sharp and caustic. "Eyes of a Stranger" has a solid rhythm, and a nice bridge leading into the solo.
A number of songs are simply just solid '80s-style hard rock: "Outcast", "Lord of the Flies" and its biting riffs, "Voyeur", and the extremely solid closing track "Visions". All in all, a strong release--but only a good buy if you enjoyed the genre.
