Black Sabbath--Heaven And Hell (1980)
Rating--8.1
**U.S. Sales Certification--Platinum**
Former Rainbow frontman Ronnie James Dio takes over on the mic following Ozzy's
departure for a solo career. Dio's Sabbath contributions are greatly overlooked, but I could never figure
out why-- perhaps reluctance to accept a replacement, no matter whom that might be? It's certainly been done before, to other
"great" bands...
In any case, the riffs are still there. The opening "Neon Knights" proves that, as do numerous other tracks.
Dio's influence on the lyrical aspect of the group is obvious, due to the instant influx of themes in the supernatural vein.
"Children Of The Sea" is a slow tempo fiesta, and when Geezer steps up on "Lady
Evil," Iommi is right behind him to fill in the gaps. The song "Heaven And Hell" should be
considered one of the first long-epic songs, and no doubt influenced the writing styles of numerous
metal acts of the 80's and 90's. Yet another highlight would be "Wishing Well," a fast mover for your listening pleasure...
