Balance of Power--Book of Secrets (1998/Nightmare)
Rating--8.8
Book of Secrets--RealAudio
Strong, soaring power/progressive metal, with edged distortion that reminds of the sharpness of Vanden Plas, classic
Queensryche, and even some gain-nasty Lynch Mob. This is in a heavier direction that the band's debut, and
new singer Lance King is a perfect fit for the sound.
Balance of Power is an extremely underrated band--simply due to a lack of exposure and press, I would guess.
All the right ingredients are here, however, and fans of the genre will definitely appreciate the talent that shows itself at every corner.
Spoken interludes are woven
between the songs, and great musical moments abound. Songs such as "Walking on Top of the World," "Book of Secrets," "Seven Days into Nevermore," and
"Miracles and Dreams" are top-shelf cuts, and of striking quality.
"Do You Dream of Angels" shows the band in a slower light, and each of "When Heaven Calls Your
Name," "It's Not Over," and "Stranger Days" are solid staples as well.
The band's follow-up will continue where this disc leaves off; watch for even bigger things from
this unit in the future...
