Bliss--Chasing the Mad Rabbit (1998/J-Bird)
Rating--7.7
A refreshing release throughout, with plenty of shifts and changes to keep the listening experience very interesting. The
strong vocal work shifts from a smooth Enuff Z'Nuff feel, to a tough and rough
Ozzy husk on the heavier tracks. Musically, the band moves from acoustic work to crisp distortion, occasionally incorporating
light keys for atmosphere. Excellent lead work is displayed in multitude, as Michael Trapp handles all the instruments for this two-man
unit, while Matt Wells does the singing.
"Karmic Wheel" is the leadoff track, and offers an edged rhythm and flow. Both
"Wrecked" and "Rejoice" are good, and "Darkest Hour" is understandably winding and evil.
The smooth and expansive
"Once Upon a Time" shows another facet of the group, and "Hope" is an impressive acoustic piece.
A heavy, thumping
backbone marks "Too Shy," and "Little Bitches" is a top highlight as it mixes the guitar chops and sounds of
George Lynch, and the structured feel of 'Ultimate Sin'-era Ozzy. Heavy, sharp, and strong.
A very impressive release, and
a duo to watch in the future...
