Beyond Fear - Beyond Fear (2006/SPV)
Rating - 7.9

This is the first true solo album from vocalist Tim Owens, he of Iced Earth - Judas Priest - Winters Bane fame. This is pretty much traditional-sounding power metal (with solid new-era distortion), and hearkens back to the bands that gave him obvious influence. There are a couple of solid high points, but overall there is nothing here that is groundbreaking. A number of the tracks are a bit generic in their songwriting, which keeps the rating down somewhat. Fans of recent releases by Painmuseum, Cage, and the like should enjoy some of the samplings here.
"Save Me" has a great, slow drum-rolling chorus, and is the disc's best effort; definitely worth many repeat listens. Opener "Scream Machine" is a 'Painkiller' style full-octane ride, and "Words of Wisdom" has some more nice chops. Other tracks that show promise include "My Last Words," "The Human Race," "Coming At You," and "Telling Lies".
