Babylon A.D.--Babylon A.D. (1989/Arista)
Rating--7.9
Back in Babylon--RealAudio
Heavier, rawer, and just a plain better release than the band's more-commonly-found second release, 'Nothing Sacred'. In fact,
this one has become a light collector's piece (on disc). Lots of '80s Cali strains are heard--but there's plenty of ballsy riffage
as well. Early Skid Row is hinted upon, as well as the raunch of the Crue
and L.A. Guns, the sharp chops of XYZ, and the toughness of Tesla.
A slicing, crawling riff punctuates "Hammer Swings Down," and other sharp axework shows up
on "The Kid Goes Wild," "Back in Babylon," "Sweet Temptation," and "Maryanne."
The slower "Caught up in the
Crossfire" has a heavy pulse to it, while an acoustic intro to "Shot O' Love" eventually gives way to a steady rhythm.
Closing
the disc out is the building, bluesy metal romp "Sally Danced". In all, yet another solid offering caught a few years out of time.
Release this puppy in '86 or '87, and you've got a million-seller on your hands...
