And the Druids Turn to Stone--RealAudio
Ayreon is a Dutch progressive metal unit, and it basically consists of instrumentalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen and a score of guests.
This disc is Part 1 of the
"Universal Migrator" set, and is self-described as "a song-oriented melodic and atmospheric journey". That about sums it up: This is a calm, smooth ride, with acoustic
guitars, synths, and effects being the norm (moreso than heavy distortion work). There are touches of Pink Floyd-like moods at times; Part 2 will be much more metallic.
An interesting facet of 'The Dream Sequencer' is the historic tales that are woven through the songs. Each track takes you farther back through the centuries, with the
vocals providing a first-person point of view. The guest musicians add spice to the selections, those including Neil Morse, Lana Lane, and Damian Wilson (formerly of
Threshold).
"My House on Mars" has that aforementioned Pink Floyd feel, and "One Small Step" and "Carried by the Wind" are both good as well.
The beautiful
voice of Lana Lane is enchanting in "Dragon on the Sea," and the super-talented Wilson takes "And the Druids Turn to Stone" from calm to emotional, and then
back again.
