Annihilator - Never, Neverland (1990/Roadrunner)
Rating - 8.2

I Am in Command-mp3

A new vocalist this time around (the band has gone through five of them, as of 2003), as Coburn Pharr takes over, formerly of Omen. He has a deeper voice than Randy Rampage, and while not possessing great range, still does a more than adequate job. There is improved production, and the tight sound the band would showcase for the duration of their career is on full display here. Good technical power-thrash; Annihilator has long been one of the fastest-riffing thrash units around.
The rapid stutter-chopping of "Road to Ruin" is classic, and "Sixes and Sevens" is full of more riffs. "Imperiled Eyes" showcases the Jeff Waters way of writing, as it has a driving thrash rhythm, and time/pace changes introduce sections of adrenaline. "Phantasmagoria" is tight, "I Am in Command" solid, and all of "Stonewall," "Reduced to Ash," and the heavy/light mixed "Never, Neverland" are good. A humorous piece (one of several during the band's career) can be found with "Kraf Dinner".
In all, an excellent thrash release, with a guitar clinic put on by Waters and Dave Scott Davis.
