Anthrax--The Sound of White Noise (1993)
Rating--7.0
**U.S. Sales Certification--Gold**
Exit Joey Belladonna, enter John Bush. Both are excellent vocalists, but have extremely different styles. Bush isn't a high-pitched vocalist like Belladonna, so even before the album came out you knew there would be some changes. What I wasn't fully expecting, however, was the monumental change in musical style. Listening to only the music, there's really no way to tell that it's Anthrax. The really bad part is that not only are the trademark Anthrax riffs gone, but the album also doesn't bring across the heavy, solid riffs that Bush's old band, Armored Saint, displayed consistently.
There are still a few good, solid metal tunes here, including "Only," "Hy Pro Glo," "Room for One More," and "Black Lodge". However, it was hard for me to let go of the old Anthrax sound--as well as that of Armored Saint, for that matter...
HOT CHOPS--Bush's singing in "Black Lodge" is very strong and emotional. Good stuff!
