Affliction--Breaking Through... (1998/Heartburn)
Rating--8.2
What's the Secret?--RealAudio
A solid 5-track indie label debut, as Affliction crunches along with sharp distortion, excellent guitar fills, and strong vocals.
Musically, the band invokes images of a little Pantera and Slayer, as well
as Fear Factory--though not quite as technical. However, none of these bands are dead-on to Affliction's
sound; the band is thrashy, but also intricate with both the lead and rhythm guitar work.
Early Anselmo is a close vocal comparison, as they
go from smooth to anger in a flash. Good stuff.
"Lethal Injection" is a solid and slashing lead track. A sharp, chugging back layer
starts off "334," and because of great pace changes it also has a heavy groove rhythm later in the song.
"What's the Secret?" continues
the ripfest, with a thrashing, pulsing mid-section. The brutal "Sledgehammer" lives up to its name, brandishing some thick
slide riffs.
Definitely a band to keep your eye on in the future; watch closely should they be fortunate enough
to land a major-label deal...
