Arch Enemy--Burning Bridges (1999/Century Media)
Rating--8.1
Demonic Science--RealAudio
Ripping-distortion extreme metal, with black/death tendencies along the lines of In Flames, At the Gates, and
the like. The vocals are more of the shouty variety than growl/scream, though. This can almost be branded "melodic" death because of the intricate rhythms and
plethora of leads and solos. Overall, the caustic distortion sound and some wicked chops make this a most tasty release.
"Dead Inside" is pure fuel, and other
scorchers include "Silverwing," "Demonic Science," "Seed of Hate," and "The Immortal". A mid-track rhythm shift in "Pilgrim" kicks the track into a different gear, and
displays yet another songwriting strength for the band.
