Angel Dust - Into the Dark Past (1986/Disaster)
Rating - 6.8

’Into the Dark Past’ is the debut album from this German band, though the 2000 and beyond version of the group is almost totally different that what appears here. Of all the members of the two eras, only drummer Dirk Assmuth contributes to both. Taking that into account, it easy to understand how the styles can be so different. The modern-day Angel Dust is a dark and driving power metal band; what you have here is a hybrid thrash unit, mixing early Slayer with perhaps the clunkiness of ‘80s Armored Saint.
There are several decent tracks featured, including "Legions of Destruction," "Gambler," "Victims of Madness," and "Atomic Roar." Compared to the other German thrash units of the day, however, the band falls a bit short, and its eventual shift to power will prove to be a wise one.
