AC/DC--Stiff Upper Lip (2000/Elektra)
Rating--7.5
**U.S. Sales Certification--Gold**
Meltdown--RealAudio
The band returns from its longest hiatus ever (five years), and emerges with the blues-based distortion it featured back
in the late seventies. The sound (if not all the songwriting) reminds of 'High Voltage,' 'Powerage,' and the like. While
the tracks are consistent with one another, they just don't reach the top-quality levels to make this a standout
release, overall.
One track is a true gem, though, and that's "Meltdown". It's the best laid-back rollicker
the boys have penned in a long time, and sets the standard to which the other tracks (unfortunately) can't quite reach.
The title track is good, and several songs have nice little grooves: "House of Jazz," "Satellite Blues," and "All Screwed Up."
The more upbeat "Give It Up" closes out the disc, and along the way high points are sprinkled about in the forms of "Can't
Stop Rock 'N' Roll" and the slower "Damned".
As always, expect the boys to throw a heckuva tour. Now entering their fourth decade of rocking, they have
long been a strong live artist, and deservedly a top draw. For those about to rock...
